The intervention involves the demolition of two existing retaining walls and the construction of new reinforced concrete works. The preparatory work is expected to start in October and will serve to widen via Cantonale to make room for future tracks. This project is part of a larger public transport development plan in Switzerland, which involves the implementation of a tram-train system connecting the cities of Zurich and Bern.

The implementation of this project was possible thanks to the collaboration between the cantonal and municipal authorities. The Canton of Bern has allocated 4.2 million francs for the realization of the works, while the city of Bern has contributed 2.2 million francs. The remaining CHF 2.2 million was financed by the Swiss State.

Track construction work is scheduled to begin in September 2024 and is expected to be completed by June 2026. The new tram-train line will be 17.5 kilometers long and will connect the city of Bern with the city of Ostermundigen. The line will be served by 12 electric trains, which will be able to carry up to 800 passengers per hour.
