Update on the Lariana

A meeting organized by the Province of Como was held today at Villa Gallia to review the work along the S.P. 583 Lariana. The meeting was attended by the Prefect of Como, Corrado Conforto Galli, and the mayors of the municipalities involved in the provincial program.

Those present were Angelo Barindelli, Mayor of Bellagio, Alberto Trabucchi, Mayor of Blevio, Angela Molinari, Mayor of Faggeto Lario, Massimo Morini, Mayor of Nesso, Federico Cola, Mayor of Pognana Lario, Rino Malacrida, Mayor of Torno, and Matteo Vanetti, Mayor of Zelbio. Amedeo Gelpi, a councillor, attended on behalf of the Municipality of Lezzeno.

Since 2018, the Province of Como has been carrying out a comprehensive program along the section of the Lariana between km 1,870, in Como, and km 31,300, in Bellagio. The stated objective is to improve the road’s safety and usability for all users, with particular attention to pedestrians and vulnerable users.

The program concerns more than just the roadway. A significant part of the work has been devoted to securing the slopes above the road, also through PNRR resources allocated to tackling hydrogeological instability. The works have involved the areas of Como, Torno, Blevio, Faggeto Lario, Pognana Lario, Nesso, Lezzeno and Bellagio.

Completed works, construction sites and projects

During the meeting, an overall picture was presented of the works already completed, those under way and the planned interventions. The discussion thus brought together in a single update the various types of work planned along the provincial road: slope safety, pedestrian paths, bridges, tunnels, barriers and renewal of road surfaces.

The meeting also made it possible to gather from the mayors needs, ideas and proposals concerning further work on the Lariana and the connected road network. The Province stated that its goal is to define future priorities together with the local areas and direct the available resources accordingly. The update discussed at Villa Gallia therefore concerns both the status of works already included in the program and the planning of the next activities on the provincial road network.

Operational details

Municipality-by-Municipality Works

The overview presented by the Province includes works of different characteristics and dimensions in the municipalities along the Lariana. In Bellagio, work on new raised sidewalks in San Giovanni, covering approximately 224 meters, was handed over on September 3, with an investment of 600 mila euro. The pedestrian paths at Vergonese and ex Cementeria, covering approximately 500 meters, were also completed in 2021 in the municipal area. In Visgnola, securing the valley-side edge and new sidewalks have been planned, with an investment of 200 mila euro.

In Blevio, the program includes the new bridge over the Covercin stream, for 150 mila euro, and repairs to the Pertus and Girola bridges. These two structures were damaged in September 2025, and the repair work is worth 630 mila euro. Also in Blevio, the systems in the Blevio I, II and III tunnels are to be upgraded, for 800 mila euro. In Torno, by contrast, upgrading the tunnel systems involves an investment of 600 mila euro.

At Faggeto Lario, new standards-compliant barriers equipped with motorcyclist-protection devices are planned, covering approximately 1.000 meters and with an investment of 700 mila euro. At Pognana Lario, the project concerns widening the Quarzano bridge, with an investment of 1 milione di euro. At Lezzeno, new raised sidewalks are planned in the direction of the Ponte del Diavolo, covering approximately 530 meters, as well as the consolidation of two bridges, with a total investment of 1,5 milioni di euro.

Particular attention has also been paid to S.P. 44, which is connected to the Lariana, in the territories of Veleso and Zelbio. At Veleso, new reinforced-concrete shoulders and guardrails are planned, funded by the Province for 400 mila euro. At Zelbio, resurfacing and slope-load-reduction works are planned along the Nesso-Veleso-Zelbio stretch. A program agreement is also indicated for regularizing the registration of the municipal roads along S.P. 44.

The President of the Province, Fiorenzo Bongiasca, summarized the authority’s position:

«The safety and passability of our road network remain one of the Province’s priorities – President Fiorenzo Bongiasca emphasizes – On the Lariana, we are carrying out an important program of works, and we know there is still much to do.»

The statement recalls the twofold objective set out in the program: to address road safety and improve its usability through works compatible with the characteristics of the individual areas.

Key points

The schedule for the upcoming construction sites

Starting October 12, work to renew the road surfaces on various sections of the Lariana will begin at night to limit disruption to traffic. The schedule covers five areas of the provincial road:

  • in Blevio, approximately 700 meters in the built-up area;
  • in Torno, approximately 600 meters in the built-up area;
  • in Faggeto Lario, approximately 700 meters at the intersection with the S.P. 43;
  • between Pognana Lario and Nesso, approximately 800 meters from Quarzano to Careno;
  • in Lezzeno, approximately 400 meters in specific sections of the built-up area.

In addition to this work, further interventions funded with ministerial funds are already planned for the 2027-2028 and 2030-2031 periods. The overall investment indicated by the Province is 8,4 million euros. The funding was also obtained thanks to the involvement of former senator Armando Valli, who followed and supported the process for allocating the resources.

The program linked to the new funds provides for the replacement and upgrading of road restraint systems. It also includes bringing the road’s geometric characteristics and its intersections into compliance with current regulations. Where the terrain allows, turning spaces may be created, with the aim of improving the road’s safety and functionality.

The Province also plans raised walkways outside the carriageway in sections where the characteristics of the road and terrain allow. These works will complete the pedestrian routes already built in recent years.

The agreement being finalized with Blevio

During the meeting, architect Fedele Mora, head of the Infrastructure Department of the Province of Como, also presented the proposals for a program agreement currently being finalized between the Province and the Municipality of Blevio. The project concerns further works at four strategic points in the area and is divided into four operational lots.

The proposals include work at Pertus, in the immediate vicinity of the school. The lot includes demolition of the existing building along the S.P. 583, widening of the provincial roadway and redevelopment of the torrential drainage channel. The agreement and resource planning are the next steps identified by the Province to continue work on the Lariana and the connected road network.
