- The Federal Institute of Virology and Immunology (IVI) is the Swiss reference laboratory for the diagnosis and research of highly contagious and other important viral animal diseases, including viral zoonoses (infectious diseases communicable between animals and humans).
- As part of a cooperation with the Vetsuisse Faculty of the University of Bern, the IVI is responsible for teaching in virology and immunology at the faculty.
- IVI has two locations.
- In Mittelhausen we have a high-security laboratory for working with highly contagious animal diseases (up to risk level 4) and zoonotic pathogens (up to risk level 3), and at the Vetsuisse Faculty in Bern for working with pathogens up to risk level 2.
- They lead a scientific group and strategically and technically design research on influenza virus infections and viral vectors.
