On Sunday, October 4, 2026, starting at 10 a.m., Cairate will host the sixteenth edition of the Cairate Festival. The event is organized by Pro Loco with the patronage of the Municipality and will have as its heart the Santa Maria Assunta Monastery, together with the exhibition spaces and the surrounding streets and squares.
It is a village festival immersed in over a thousand years of history. The day will combine art, culture, gastronomy and entertainment, with initiatives distributed inside the monastic complex and in the nearby areas. The public will be welcomed in one of the most fascinating historic sites in the Province of Varese, a complex whose origins date back to the Lombard age and which still today preserves the traces of the various phases of its long history.
The Santa Maria Assunta Monastery
The monastery represents the reference point of the event also for the historical value of the place. Tradition traces its foundation back to 737 AD, at the wish of the Lombard noblewoman Manigunda. Historical studies, however, place the origins of the complex between the Lombard period and the Early Middle Ages.
For centuries the monastery was an economic and social reference point for Cairate. Its architecture preserves a stratification that tells more than a millennium of history, while the great cloister organizes the spaces of the complex. It is in this setting that the activities of the Cairate Festival will unfold, among halls, exhibition areas, streets and squares.
The sixteenth edition thus retains the popular character of a village festival and pairs it with the opportunity to enter a historic place, get to know its surroundings and experience its spaces during a day open to the public. The programme includes exhibitions, guided tours, family‑oriented proposals, sports activities, entertainment and a gastronomic route set up in the monastery garden.
Operational details
Exhibitions, visits and activities in the complex
The spaces of the Monastery of Santa Maria Assunta will host several exhibitions with different opening dates. The exhibition "Acquerelli dell'Anima" by Patrizia Gosio will be visitable from September 26 to October 4. Until October 11, instead, "Scopofobia – When the fear of being observed dominates thought" and "Ugo Zovetti – Homo" will remain on display.
On the sole day of Sunday, October 4, there will also be an artistic exhibition curated by L'Arca Cooperativa Sociale. The exhibitions will therefore accompany the feast within the monastic complex, alongside the other initiatives, offering a dedicated art proposal.
Guided visits and the market
Another appointment will be represented by guided tours of the Monastery, conducted by the volunteers of Pro Loco. The complex is developed around the large cloister and preserves testimonies of the different phases of its history, besides archaeological traces of the Lombard era.
Local tradition also wants that Frederick Barbarossa was hosted in the guesthouse on the eve of the Battle of Legnano. This story adds to the historical and archaeological elements that will be part of the visit to the monastery during the day.
Outside the complex, there will be space for the market of hobbyists and non-profit associations of the territory. The proposal will widen the festival area beyond the monastic environments, involving the streets and squares surrounding the historic site.
Games, sports and flavors
Ample space will be reserved for families. The Lombarda Pompieri Sempre ODV Association will curate recreational activities and inflatables, while the Hornets Tradate will propose softball and baseball demonstrations dedicated to boys.
The program will also include a table football tournament curated by the Pro Loco of Lonate Ceppino, the Kamishibai theatre, giant chess and other entertainment proposals.
Finally, in the monastery garden, Il Camminar Gustando will return, an active gastronomic path from 12 to 14:30. The cards, available until sold out, will cost 10 euros and will allow discovering the gastronomic proposals while walking in one of the most suggestive corners of the town.

The second appointment is scheduled for Sunday, October 4, with the start of the initiatives at 10 am. The main day will take place between the Monastery of Cairate and the adjacent streets, gathering in a single program the activities planned in the historic complex and in the surrounding spaces.
