ICT system specialist: in (m/f/d) with focus on network services and DevOps

To support research and teaching, the IT services of ETH Zurich operate as a service organization in a large and complex IT environment. We offer the members of ETH Zurich high-quality, flexible and scalable computer science services and support them in competition with the best universities in the world.

The ID Infrastructure (INFRA) section is responsible for the data and voice networks of ETH Zurich as well as for planning, installation and maintenance. They are also responsible for services in the areas of storage, virtual servers / containers, multimedia equipment of lecture halls, video productions and recordings of courses.

Millions of network queries per day, thousands of users: inside and central services that must be available around the clock. As an ICT system specialist: in (m/f/d) with a focus on network services and DevOps, ensure that ETH remains networked at all times.

Job description

In this role, you assume responsibility for the infrastructure that makes the network operation of ETH possible in the first place. Together with the Netcenter team, you ensure that central basic services are operated and developed reliably, securely and in a sustainable manner.

You are responsible for setting up, operating and further developing the ETH internal proxy infrastructure and ensuring that it works reliably and securely. You work on the basis of existing architectural specifications, develop the necessary detailed concepts independently and make operational decisions independently.

You also manage the central DHCP infrastructure and develop it continuously. For the DNS and RADIUS services, you take over the stable operation, plan and realize upgrades and ensure the availability of these for the entire ETH essential services.

In addition, you are responsible for the system side of our platform: Linux Server, Kubernetes, GitLab and the CI/CD routes on which our software is built and rolled out. You work at the interface between system operation and software development: What is noticeable in the company flows directly into our further development.

In addition, you will continue to operate and develop the Netcenter Kubernetes platform. You work closely with Netcenter development and actively contribute your ideas to the modernization of a grown system landscape.

In everyday life, you analyze and repair disruptions in complex, distributed systems, automate operational processes and ensure stable and efficient infrastructure operation. You plan and coordinate maintenance windows and technical adjustments independently.

Profile

You are a tech-savvy person with pleasure in complex infrastructures and want to help shape central network services for one of Europe’s leading universities.

In addition, you bring the following

• Completed training in computer science (FH, HF or EFZ with corresponding further training) or a comparable qualification.
• Several years of experience in operating Linux server systems in productive environments.
• In-depth knowledge of network-related basic services such as proxy, DNS, DHCP or RADIUS.
• Good knowledge of network technologies such as TCP/IP, routing, firewalling and TLS.
• Experience with automation and infrastructure-as-code, ideally with Ansible, Git and Bash or Python scripting.
• Knowledge in the field of containers and Kubernetes is an advantage.
• Strong capability for structured analysis and resolution of disturbances in complex system landscapes.
• High personal responsibility, independence and pleasure in accompanying technical topics from planning to operation.
• Team spirit as well as enjoyment of working closely with developers:inside, specialist areas and colleagues:inside.
