Professional description The profession of laboratory technician/chemistry is divided into two disciplines:
Synthesis
From two or more starting materials, you produce a variety of new peptides, amino acid derivatives and other organic substances and compounds. Laborators calculate the amounts of starting materials to be used and allow them to react with each other. They isolate the desired product from the reaction mixture and subsequently purify the crude product obtained. The substances thus prepared are analyzed by them for quantity, quality and composition. In the course with a focus on synthesis, special emphasis is placed on the production of substances.
Laboratory technicians work in a team using a variety of glass apparatus and computer-assisted devices. All work steps and reaction sequences are closely monitored and recorded so that the work contributes to continuous process improvement.
Analysis
Laboratory technicians with a focus on analytics are mainly involved in quality control (QC). They accompany the entire flow of goods through the company. The entry control checks the raw materials for their identity, purity and other criteria. In the course of a synthesis, supplementary analyses are carried out using a wide variety of methods for the production areas. Once a product has been completed, it is subjected to a detailed final analysis (final inspection) by the QC, in which all quality requirements defined in advance are checked. In these analyses, a large number of results are generated, which the laboratory operators subsequently evaluate, process, convert and compare. Handling small sample quantities, working with sometimes highly complex, computer-controlled devices and evaluating results with highly specific software are part of everyday life.
