The Position In the experimental animal husbandry, animal keepers deal mainly with small mammals such as mice, rats or rabbits as well as with fish.

Animal keepers: insides are responsible for the appropriate care, keeping and breeding of experimental animals. They are responsible for the care and welfare of the animals. Animals must have sufficient opportunities for contact, employment, movement and retreat. For the welfare of the animals, animal caregivers take into account the different food requirements of the animals and prevent conflicts.

As mediators: between animal and laboratory, they are important people. They know the animal best and thus record any changes the fastest. This is very important in all areas of laboratory animal science. Very good observation and empathy are crucial. In many cases, animal care providers work closely with scientists who investigate a wide variety of medical and biological issues. In animal care, animal keepers have an important, but sometimes also difficult task. They are involved in the treatment of animals and in research. Animal keepers: insiders know the hygiene regulations in the various work areas and work according to them. The internal working and documentation regulations must be meticulously adhered to. Communication with supervisors and researchers is very important and the company-specific documentation systems are used efficiently.

Typical tasks and activities are

• Control of climatic conditions
• Observation of animals
• Provision of fresh cages and materials
• Cleaning of premises
• Cleaning of dirty cages and materials
• Communication with laboratory staff
• Collection of animal data

Requirements

• Medium or highest school level (exceptions for very good performance in the basic level) or Matura/Abitur
• German mother tongue or level B2
• Joy in dealing with animals
• Natural, reasonable animal love
• Teamwork
• sensitivity in dealing with animals and humans
• Interest in biology and animal behaviour
• Good observation ability
• Technical understanding
• Reliability and responsibility
• Good physical constitution (no allergies)
• No disgust with smells and excretions
• The cleanliness sense or Willingness to do dirty work
• Balance and patience

Training In addition to training at the Vocational School, the following topics are practically taught in basic training at Roche:

• Handling of animals (handling)
• Operation of various small and large devices
• Cleaning of used cages
• Dealing with IT devices

The basic training prepares the learners for their use in the specialist departments at Roche (3 apprenticeship years). There it is important to apply the theoretical knowledge learned so far in practice and to further develop one’s own capabilities.

The training opportunities After successful training, there are various further training opportunities at the Higher School of Applied Sciences (HF), University of Applied Sciences (FH) or University. For the latter you need a vocational maturity (BM1 (accompanying teaching, after consultation or BM2 after training), for the university additionally a passerelle. Furthermore, there are various offers from professional associations and institutions as well as from vocational and technical schools.
