Full description
Department of Quantitative Biomedicine
Start of employment January / February 2027, or by agreement, temporary
The Department of Quantitative Biomedicine is an interdisciplinary biomedical research unit that combines basic science with biotechnological and medical research, using both experimental and computational approaches. The Molecular Plasmid Ecology Lab (Kümmerli Group) studies the ecology and evolution of antibiotic resistance plasmids, in particular how plasmids interact and compete with each other, for example through type IV CRISPR-Cas systems. We are launching a project to identify plasmid-encoded competition systems.
Your responsibilities
We seek a motivated student to support our team in the lab and help kick-start a project to identify plasmid-encoded competition systems. Your tasks include molecular lab work (PCR, cloning, building and verifying bacterial strains and plasmids), competition experiments between plasmids and strains, and organising and analysing your data while keeping clear records of strains, plasmids and protocols. There is room to bring in your own ideas and influence how the project develops.
Your profile
- Matriculated Master's student (University of Zurich, ETH) in biology or a related field; recent MSc graduates can also apply.
- Solid hands-on skills in microbiology and molecular biology (e.g. PCR, gel electrophoresis, sterile culture handling, growth rate experiments).
- Highly motivated, with a genuine interest in the topic, and keen to learn new skills.
- Careful, reliable and well organised, able to work independently and in a team.

Questions about this listing
What salary does Universität Zürich offer for this role?
The original listing does not state a salary. Our estimate for this role and sector in Zürich is CHF 91'500 - 128'000 gross per year — an estimate, not a figure communicated by Universität Zürich. The calculator on this site converts a gross salary into your actual net take-home once cross-border tax and social contributions are applied.
Is this a full-time role, and what type of contract does Universität Zürich offer?
This listing is a part-time and full-time position. The contract type shown here comes directly from the employer's original posting; always confirm exact hours, notice period and probation length with Universität Zürich during the application process, since these details can vary by role even within the same contract category.
Do I need a cross-border work permit for a role in Zürich?
EU/EFTA residents living in the border zone of the country adjoining Canton Zürich can apply for a G permit; the Swiss employer files it with that canton's migration office after the contract is signed. Border-zone rules and processing times vary by neighbouring country and canton, so confirm the specifics with Zürich's cantonal migration office or with HR during the application.
