Institute of Parasitology

Job as of 1 February 2027 or by arrangement, temporary

The Institute of Parasitology of the University of Zurich (IPZ) is a double institute of the Vetsuisse and the Faculty of Medicine. We conduct courses for students of veterinary and human medicine as well as biology. Our research group "Vector Tomology" investigates various aspects of insects that can transmit pathogens. These include questions about the biology and ecology of vectors and the development of new methods for their identification, monitoring and control. The advertised research project is carried out in cooperation with Dr. Benedikt Schmidt from the Institute of Evolutionary Biology and Environmental Sciences of the University of Zurich and Info Fauna Karch.

Tasks

We offer a veterinary dissertation as part of an interdisciplinary research project at the interface between vector entomology, veterinary medicine and nature conservation. Title: Amphibious waters as potential hotbeds of bitches. Culicoides are small, bloodsucking insects that can transmit various pathogens, including the bluetongue virus and Shamonda-like virus. These viruses can cause significant health and economic damage to livestock. To protect endangered amphibians, new ponds and small waters are created in Switzerland. However, little is known as to whether these waters are at the same time suitable breeding grounds for bitches and thus could increase the risk of transmission of pathogens to farmed animals. The aim of the project is to investigate the role of amphibious waters as potential hotbeds of wild bladders and to identify possible links between amphibian protection, wild bladder occurrences and the risk of vector-borne animal diseases. Results should help to better understand potential conflicts of interest between nature conservation and animal health and to develop scientifically sound recommendations for practice.

Specific tasks

  • Conducting field studies on farms and nearby amphibious waters in Switzerland.
  • Identification of the frequency and biodiversity of neps using traps.
  • taking soil samples to investigate the presence of Culicoides larvae by molecular biological methods.
  • Recording of amphibious species diversity in and around the waters under study.
  • Investigation of collected dross for relevant pathogens.
  • Evaluation of the collected data to assess possible relationships between aquatic characteristics, amphibian diversity and biting occurrences.
  • Support for courses of the Institute of Parasitology.

The work includes regular sampling in the field, morphological identification of midges, molecular biology laboratory work (e.g. PCR) and statistical evaluation of the collected data.

We offer

  • A dedicated, interdisciplinary research team.
  • Varied field and laboratory work.
  • A well-equipped laboratory and a motivating research environment.
  • Close scientific support.
