Role overview
Postdoc in modelling of early prokaryote evolution and interaction with earth geodynamics
100%, Zurich, fixed-term print Drucken
The National Centre of Competence in Research NCCR Genesis is a research infrastructure project funded by SNSF focussing on exploring the emergence of life in the Universe.
- Postdoc in modelling of early prokaryote evolution and interaction with earth geodynamics
- 100%, Zurich, fixed-term print Drucken
- Your main responsibilities will include:
- Building up on existing modeling of anerobic autotrophs and heterotrophs (Sauterey et al 2020, Nasreldine et al in prep) to design a model simulating assemblages of metabolic communities as a function of glo

Application process
- We strongly encourage applications from under-represented groups.
- In the context of this project, we are looking for a 2-years fully funded postdoctoral candidate. Project background
- How did the earliest forms of life evolve, and how did their evolution interact with the changing physical and chemical environment of the early Earth?
- This project investigates the co-evolution of life and the Earth system over geological timescales, with a particular focus on the major transitions in energy metabolism of early prokaryotic life.
- The emergence and succession of different energy metabolisms was likely allowed by changing earth surface conditions.
- It is unclear which metabolic strategies were most likely to have emerged first, and how shifting environmental conditions may have determined major metabolic transitions in Earth’s history.
- The project will couple models of prokaryotic evolution and energy metabolism with existing and newly developed geodynamic simulations of the early Earth.
- These simulations will explore how mantle dynamics, lithospheric rheology, surface relief, weathering, CO₂ fluxes, palaeogeography, atmosphere, and climate evolved as the Earth cooled.

Questions about this listing
What salary does ETH Zürich offer for this role?
ETH Zürich lists CHF 73'500 - 111'500 gross per year for this position in Zurich. This is the salary published in the original listing (or, when the employer omits a figure, a realistic estimate for the role and sector) — the calculator on this site converts it to your actual net take-home once cross-border tax and social contributions are applied.
Is this a full-time role, and what type of contract does ETH Zürich offer?
This listing is a fixed-term contract position. The contract type shown here comes directly from the employer's original posting; always confirm exact hours, notice period and probation length with ETH Zürich during the application process, since these details can vary by role even within the same contract category.
Do I need a cross-border work permit for a role in Zürich?
EU/EFTA residents living in the border zone of the country adjoining Canton Zürich can apply for a G permit; the Swiss employer files it with that canton's migration office after the contract is signed. Border-zone rules and processing times vary by neighbouring country and canton, so confirm the specifics with Zürich's cantonal migration office or with HR during the application.
