The assessors are non-professional judges who have decision-making authority in judicial matters (art. 4 LJ). An assessor is convened according to the needs of the authority concerned. He/she receives session allowances in accordance with art. 79a RJ. The assessors are elected by the Grand Council, upon notice from the Judicial Council which puts out a competition for judicial functions for the Grand Council (art. 12 LJ).

The Judicial Council is looking for people with experience and skills in the following areas:

  • Profile 1: Accounting (verification of accounts with Curatorship Services, control of approval decisions)
  • Profile 2: Sociology (procedures affecting people undergoing reintegration, particularly young adults with a migratory background)
  • Profile 3: Pediatrics, nursing (procedures with young children, assessments of the child's healthy and social development)
  • Profile 4: Juvenile delinquency, prevention (procedures affecting minors - cross-relationship with juvenile criminal law) and/or Pedagogy/Education (child protection procedure with school/educational component)
  • Profile 5: 3rd age (assessment of elderly people)
  • Candidates must be very available during the day and flexible to the extent that the sessions are scheduled at short notice due to the cases handled by the Justices of the Peace
  • Mastery of the French language with good knowledge of the German language
  • Active citizenship at the cantonal level. Persons of foreign nationality must hold a settlement permit and have been domiciled in the canton for at least five years. Candidates must not be the subject of an act of lack of assets, and must not have been criminally convicted for facts incompatible with the function

  • High daytime availability and flexibility: sessions are scheduled at short notice
  • Fluency in French with good knowledge of German Active citizenship at cantonal level
  • Foreign nationals: residence permit and domiciled in the canton for at least 5 years No acts of default of assets
