Context
The Zurich Cantonal Police carried out a major anti-drug operation in Spreitenbach, Aargau, on 21 March 2026. During the raid officers seized more than one ton of cannabis, 24,000 illegal hemp plants, several firearms, ammunition, a bullet-proof vest and about CHF 11,000 in cash. Three men were arrested: a 36-year-old German, a 26-year-old Kosovar and a 29-year-old Albanian. All three are charged with violating the Narcotics Act (LStup) and Swiss entry and residence regulations. The raid began when officers noticed a man leaving the suspicious building and driving off. After stopping the car for a check, traces of marijuana and €30,000 in cash (about CHF 27,300) were found inside. The man was immediately arrested. Shortly afterwards two more men were stopped as they entered the same building, which was then searched. Among other evidence, authorities found an extremely sophisticated indoor cultivation system with high-power LED lamps and automated irrigation. 📊 Impact of the seizure According to the cantonal police, the quantity of cannabis seized could have generated a black market worth over CHF 10 million. To give an idea of the scale, the 24,000 plants covered more than 1,000 m², roughly two basketball courts. 💡 Inter-cantonal cooperation The operation required coordination between the cantonal police of Zurich and Aargau, plus technical support from the Zurich Forensic Institute. House searches were also carried out in the canton of Zurich, leading to further seizures, although details have not been released for confidentiality reasons. ⚠️ Laws in force In Switzerland the LStup punishes illegal cannabis cultivation severely, with penalties of up to 20 years in the most serious cases. Since 1 January 2021 a revision introduced administrative fines of up...
